Never Coming Home

Wooden bones
Laid bare by careful hands
Stripped of lath and plaster
Naked for the world
Protective skin
Paneling of oak and birch
Lays cracked and broken
Outside an open door
Pathway to the heart
Carpet torn and dirtied
Not just by tiny hands
An effort to make it stronger
Make it newer
Paint it over
Change the face
But keep the soul
Skin of drywall
Covers the same bones
Wooden supports of love
A frame of home
